Arthur Lovejoy, Gregory Bateson, and the challenge of finding our place within a living world.

The two thinkers, Arthur Lovejoy and Gregory Bateson, approached the question of how the living world is ordered from very different directions. In The Great Chain of Being (1936), Lovejoy traced the long history of a hierarchical cosmos; in Mind and Nature (1979), Bateson searched for the patterns that connect living systems. Read together, their work reveals a profound shift from imagining the world as a chain of ranked beings to understanding it as a field of patterned relationships. Bateson, who refers explicitly to Lovejoy, tries to think beyond this inherited structure. He is not looking for another ladder. He is looking for another grammar of relation. Between the two books lies a question central to Anthrotopia: how can we understand the human place in the living world without returning to human supremacy, and without dissolving difference into the vague reassurance that “everything is connected”? That question is not merely philosophical. It shapes how we know, how we imagine responsibility, and how we understand what it means to belong to a world that is alive.

The Vertical Order of Being



The Great Chain of Being did not originate as a single, unified doctrine. Lovejoy showed how ideas drawn from different philosophical and theological traditions gradually came together to form a remarkably persistent vision of cosmic order. At its core were three principles: plenitude, continuity, and gradation (Lovejoy, 1936). The created order was imagined as plenitudinous: every possible kind of being had to find expression within it. It was also continuous, without absolute gaps between its forms, and graded, with beings arranged according to degrees of perfection. Lovejoy traces a cosmological order often represented as a ladder or chain, extending from inert matter through plants, animals, and human beings to angels and, ultimately, God (Lovejoy, 1936). This was more than a system of classification. It offered a comprehensive account of why the world contained such a diversity of beings and how each belonged within a single ordered whole.

Humans were not simply outside nature; they occupied a privileged place within it, between animal embodiment and spiritual reason. That position could produce humility: the human being was neither self-created nor self-sufficient. It also sustained a durable hierarchy in which other forms of life appeared lower, less complete, less rational, and eventually less worthy of moral attention. This ambiguity matters. The The Great Chain of Being did not imagine humanity as separate from nature in the modern sense. It connected everything. But it connected everything vertically:

Difference became rank.
Relation became position.
To belong was to stand above or below.

From the seventeenth century onward, and especially during the Enlightenment, the traditional theological cosmos gradually lost its authority. Yet the hierarchy it had sustained did not simply disappear. Elements of its structure were carried into secular narratives of progress, civilisation, intelligence, development, and control. The human no longer needed to stand near the top of a divinely created ladder; it could become the implicit measure of the world through reason, technology, and mastery. The ladder remained, even when its highest rungs had been removed.

Another Grammar of Order

Bateson begins from a different concern. He is less interested in arranging beings than in understanding the relations through which living forms develop, communicate, and recognise one another. His guiding question is not: What is higher?
It is: What connects? The phrase for which Mind and Nature is best remembered, “the pattern which connects” (Bateson, 1979), is sometimes reduced to a reassuring claim about universal interconnectedness. Bateson is not making a slogan of connectedness; his concern is how relations take form through symmetry, repetition, transformation, resemblance, difference, communication, and histories of development.

Bateson asks what connects a crab to a lobster. Their relation does not lie in their occupying neighbouring rungs on a ladder, but in the comparable patterns through which their forms can be described and transformed. He extends this inquiry to the formal resemblances found across species, including those between humans and horses. Living beings are connected not by sameness, but by patterns of difference, resemblance, and evolutionary transformation (Bateson, 1979, pp. 9–11).

This is where Bateson’s thinking becomes particularly relevant to Anthrotopia. A relational worldview must do more than affirm that everything is connected; it must ask how those connections are organised and what forms of behaviour they make possible. Living systems are shaped by boundaries, asymmetries, dependencies, constraints, conflicts, and violence. Relations can enable care and mutual flourishing, but they can also produce exploitation, fragility, and destruction.

This is where Bateson departs most sharply from the Great Chain. He does not reject levels of order; rather, he rejects hierarchies of value while preserving distinctions among forms of organisation, context, communication, and learning. A message, for instance, differs from a message about a message; an action differs from the context that gives it meaning; and an organism differs from the ecosystem within which its behaviour has consequences (Bateson, 1979).

The Wider Circuit of Mind



Bateson’s account of mind further unsettles the image of the human as a self-contained individual. Mental activity, for him, is not necessarily confined to an individual brain. It can take place through circuits of perception and response that include bodies, tools, other organisms, and environments. His well-known example is a person felling a tree (Bateson, 1979, pp. 92–93). The eye registers a change in the cut. The nervous system and muscles adjust the movement of the axe. The next strike alters the tree. That new difference returns through perception and changes the next movement. The process runs through person, tool, and environment. The point is not that the axe or the tree has a human mind. The point is that the boundary of a mental process may be wider than the boundary of the individual person. In some situations, the relevant unit is not “the human” alone, but a circuit of perception, action, correction, and response.

This also clarifies Bateson’s famous definition of information as a difference that makes a difference (Bateson, 1979, p. 92). The world contains innumerable differences. Only some become consequential within a particular relation. A change in light may alter a plant’s growth. A gesture may shift the atmosphere of a conversation. A decline in one species may reorganise an ecosystem. Meaning does not sit inside an isolated object. It appears within a pattern of response. This offers a richer account of human nature than the familiar opposition between biological instinct and cultural freedom. Human beings are biological, but biology does not mean blind competition alone. Bateson challenges theories that reduce life to greed, violence, and purposive self-interest (Bateson, 1979). These tendencies are part of human existence, but they are no more fundamental than grace, play, beauty, symmetry, and learning – all of which are equally rooted in our biological and cultural lives.

Within this broader understanding of life, human beings possess particular capacities. We create institutions, symbols, technologies, and infrastructures whose consequences extend far beyond the moments in which they were invented. We can also reflect on the systems in which we participate. Yet these capacities do not place us outside nature; they are expressions of living processes amplified through language, culture, and technological power.

The problem begins when this reflective intelligence fails to perceive the wider system in which it operates. An economy may treat soil fertility as an external variable. A city may behave as if water simply arrives and waste simply disappears. A design process may focus on the user while ignoring the labour, materials, energy systems, and ecosystems that make the designed object possible. In each case, the problem is not simply a lack of information, but a failure of perception. The boundary of concern has been drawn too narrowly.

Ecology as a crisis of knowing

For Bateson, ecological crisis is also an epistemological crisis. Destructive patterns persist because they are supported by ways of thinking that separate what is functionally joined. Linear explanations are especially tempting. A problem appears. An intervention is made. A result follows. The wider circuit disappears into the background. But living systems respond. They adapt, compensate, resist, absorb, or amplify disturbance. What looks like successful control at one level may produce instability at another. A short-term solution may reduce the flexibility that allowed a system to survive in the first place. The ecological consequences of an action are therefore not external side effects. They belong to the action’s larger pattern.

This has direct consequences for design. Design is often described as the movement from intention to solution. Bateson asks us to look beyond that moment. What happens after the solution enters the world? What habits does it create? What dependencies does it produce? Which relationships does it strengthen, and which does it weaken? What returns through feedback? There is no point at which the designer stands completely outside the circuit. Observation changes what is observed. Intervention reorganises the conditions of future intervention. The task is not perfect prediction. It is the cultivation of responsiveness. For Anthrotopia, this suggests an understanding of design as participation in an unfolding system rather than mastery over a passive situation. Human intention matters, but it is not the only source of agency or meaning.

Aesthetics as a Way of Knowing



One of the most compelling aspects of Mind and Nature is the seriousness with which Bateson treats aesthetic experience. For him, aesthetics is not merely a way of presenting established facts more clearly or persuasively. A well-designed diagram, for example, can certainly help communicate information. But its arrangement may also reveal a pattern—the relation between part and whole, repetition and variation, or organism and environment—that would otherwise remain difficult to perceive. Aesthetics, in this sense, belongs to the production of knowledge, not only to its communication (Bateson, 1979).  What matters here is not whether something appears beautiful, but whether its form makes relations perceptible. Aesthetic perception, in Bateson’s sense, helps us recognise patterns that analytical habits may otherwise separate: part and whole, similarity and variation, organism and habitat, present form and developmental history.

Art becomes important because it can train attention towards form, relation, and pattern. Bateson illustrates this through an exercise with art students examining a crab. Rather than treating the animal as a collection of isolated features, they came to recognise the corresponding relations within its claws and legs. For Bateson, this shift from size and quantity towards “shapes, forms, and relations” exemplifies aesthetic perception: a responsiveness to the pattern that connects (Bateson, 1979, pp. 8–9). Art can cultivate this kind of attention, making relations perceptible before they are fully articulated in analytical terms.

Why this matters to Anthrotopia?

This essay traces the movement from Lovejoy’s chain to Bateson’s pattern representing more than a change in metaphor. It suggests a different way of organising knowledge and practice. Science makes patterns of relation perceptible through observation, comparison, and explanation. The arts give those relations experiential form, allowing them to be felt before they are fully articulated. Design carries them into objects, systems, infrastructures, and institutions. The humanities examine the histories and assumptions that shape what is noticed, valued, or ignored in the first place.

Anthrotopia’s post-disciplinary orientation is therefore more than a preference for collaboration. It responds to the character of the living world itself. No single discipline can adequately understand a world in which biological, symbolic, technological, ecological, economic, and political processes continually shape one another. Relational thinking requires more than one way of knowing.

This also has practical implications for design. A relational approach is not achieved by making objects look organic, nor by reducing beauty to proportion or harmony. It requires attention to the wider systems in which design participates: the materials it depends on, the behaviours it encourages, the institutions it supports, and the consequences that return through feedback. Anthrotopia is therefore concerned not only with how knowledge is communicated, but with how different forms of inquiry can alter perception, guide intervention, and reshape the conditions of collective life.
