From Landscapes to Sculptural Portraits: Artistic Dialogues with Nature.

The exhibition People – Nature – Future presented the internationally acclaimed works of the Scandinavian artist duo Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen. Their remarkable, ongoing art project »Eyes as Big as Plates« (2011), explores the relationship between people and nature. Over the years, the artists have travelled across the world, portraying individuals within diverse landscapes. Each portrait features its subject enveloped in sculptural costumes crafted from natural materials found on-site. Here, nature serves as both content and context. With playful ease, the artists create symbiotic narratives and new aesthetic worlds that convey a powerful message wrapped in stillness: We are nature.

As part of their ongoing exploration of the relationship between people and nature, Hjorth and Ikonen carried out projects in Norway, Finland, France, the USA, the UK, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Japan, Senegal, the Outer Hebrides, Tasmania, and Greenland. In connection with the exhibition People – Nature – Future, the duo traveled to Munich and its surroundings for a new photo shoot – marking another milestone in their evolving project.

The exhibition and photo shoot was initiated, organized and curated by Ingrid Rügemer within the framework of the former non-profit organization Symbio(s)cene). Exhibition Venue: Culturesphere Gallery, Munich

The exhibition was accompanied by a series of talks. Below is a selection of recordings.

The exhibition was also accompanied by two photoshoots, in Munich. See the making of “Tina” and “Michael” below.
